About

Statement

My photographic work at the surface may seem as little more than documentation of derelict buildings. Indeed, that is how this ever-evolving investigation started; an ethical investigation into the spaces society cast aside. However, after nearly a decade of investigation of abandoned buildings of practically every form and condition, I have realized these spaces speak on far more interesting levels.

Rather, my work in actuality is an investigation into the subliminal characteristics evident in abandoned buildings. The spaces always tell a story, so in many ways this work contains narrative aspects, however what is really being addressed is the unique conditions present at these sites: they are incessantly divorced of the human context that created them, yet pieces of stories still remain. In many other ways, the work also reflects the solitude that is afforded by these spaces. It really is something special to experience totally fabricated spaces devoid of people or activity.

Methodology

Although I do not adhere specifically to one format of image capture, I primarily use a Sinar F2 4×5 monorail view camera and Schneider-Kruznach lenses. In the past I have extensively used 35mm, 120 and digital, but I have found that nothing comes close to helping me achieve my photographic vision than the view camera. Having complete control over perspective and depth of field, coupled with access to some of the greatest lenses on earth make the view camera an obvious choice for me. As many photographers embrace the convenience and speed of the digital era, I have chosen to embrace the format that knows no compromises, and requires no batteries. Using a view camera is a meticulous and calculated form of photography, which I believe reflects the precision and detail often found in the design of built spaces.
